As reported at Asbury Park Press, an ongoing investigation that is being referred to as Operation Medscam, involving the New Jersey Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Jersey City Police Department’s Special Investigation Unit, has thus far resulted in the arrest of 32 people accused to be involved in a criminal network that distributed drugs in New Jersey.

The latest arrestee was a Matawan doctor who has been accused of selling prescriptions for popular drugs like Percocet and Xanax in exchange for cash from Medicaid patients.

Criminal cases involving charges like these tend to be very complex. Often times, law enforcement authorities have been spending a great deal of time collecting evidence against those accused of being involved in such criminal enterprises.

Additionally, for cases like this, there is often greater political pressure to obtain convictions. With this increased pressure for conviction, law enforcement may be motivated to take action that may deprive defendants of certain rights.
