New Jersey Marijuana Offenses

Under New Jersey law, one of the most common marijuana offenses is possession. An arrest for possession of marijuana possession can result in severe criminal penalty. Such penalties may include suspension of driver’s license and may even result in jail time. When the possession charge is for fifty grams of marijuana, or less, without intent to sell, under New Jersey law, this may be classified as a disorderly persons offense. Marijuana possession convictions sometimes results in a loss of license for six months.

When the charges involve marijuana possession in excess of the fifty gram mark, the individual may be subject to a criminal offense of the fourth degree. Under the laws of the state of New Jersey, crimes of this nature are felonies and may lead to as much as eighteen months of jail time. Further, this type of marijuana possession may result in a hefty monetary penalty and some type of longer term probation period.
